Object reference not set to an instance of an object when accessing Record Editor
KBA-01481-P4P0R7
Problem
When a user try to open the Record Editor area they receive an error displaying 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.'  The error indicates that saved view or entity which no longer exists in CRM is still being referenced in the configuration file associated with the affected user(s).
Solution

1) Navigate to %ProgramFiles%\c360 Solutions\V5\Organizations\orgname\UserPreferences

Where orgname is your organization name in crm.

2) Next determine the corresponding user preferences file associated with the affected user.  The configuration files are named by the GUIDs of the user.  So in order to find which user the file belongs to you can open each user preference file and reviewing the FullName configuration key.  Another suggestion is to open user's record in CRM which reported the error and review the address bar to see their GUID.
NOTE: Typically the browser's address bar will be removed in the IE windows in CRM.  To activate them just create a new window (Ctrl + N) for the user record.

3) Open the user preference file in Notepad (or another text editor program).
Find RecordEditor_EntityType and RecordEditor_ViewGUID keys and simple remove these key from file.

Example:
In user preferences file you need to remove these keys
    <add key='RecordEditor_EntityType' value='account' />
    <add key='RecordEditor_ViewGUID' value='{00000000-0000-0000-00AA-000010001001}' />

4) This will reset Record Editor settings to their default values.

NOTE: You may have to perform either an IISRESET or clear the browser's cache (delete temporary Internet cache) before the changes take effect.
The last release comprising this behaviour was 5.0.3.157. In later releases default settings used automatically.
